Future Sport Workshop
- Fundamentals
Challenging young people to invent a brand new sport
OVERVIEW
The National Saturday Club gives 13-16 year olds across the UK the opportunity to take part in creative learning programmes at their local university, college or cultural institution, on Saturday mornings for free.
Spanning the subjects of Art & Design, Craft & Making, Fashion & Business, Film & Media, Science & Engineering, Society & Change and Writing & Talking.
CHALLENGE
To deliver a creative programme and 1x day workshop in Burnley challenging young people to explore, develop and design a brand new sport called ‘Trops’ (sport backwards).
WHAT WE DID
Outcomes of the project from the young people included new sport concepts, chosen target audiences, objectives, rules, field of play as well as sportswear design prototypes needed to play.
We worked collaboratively with the young people taking part remotely, helping them develop their research and concepts, before taking over Burnley College’s sports hall for the workshop.
Setting up a sports lab area for physical activity testing of the sport concepts, and a design studio area where the sportswear prototypes were made.
DELIVERED FOR
What the stakeholders think
This project has really exceeded our expectations and for the young people aged 13-16 who were involved.
Not limiting the brief to one day, but instead creating a longer programme that the young people could take part in – researching, experimenting and helping them really think deeply about sport participation and the design of sportswear.
It spurred them on to do more than they think they can achieve.
