Eden from Coaches Corner talks about her experience of attending a Trustee meeting

“These are really insightful skills to learn and young people aren’t always given the opportunity to take more of an active role in charities.”

My name is Eden, I'm 20, from Northern Ireland and have been a member of Coaches Corner for 3 months now and I’m also a social media volunteer. My involvement in sport has mostly been in taekwondo but I’ve also taken part in several different sports over the years as well.

In June, I was given the opportunity to participate in a League Leaders Trustee meeting online. The meeting was really interesting and beneficial as I got to meet a number of different professionals in the sporting field and also share my ideas as a young person, having a deeper and behind-the-scenes look into the charity.

It really inspired me to get involved with League Leaders further and also give me some ideas on how to make it even more inclusive and provide more opportunities for young people. I learned a lot about how the charity is run and its different aspects like marketing and finance. These are really insightful skills to learn, and young people aren’t always given the opportunity to take more of an active role in charities. I think this is something that League Leaders does really well.

It’s important that young people are involved in making decisions and can attend board meetings because they offer unique and diverse perspectives, knowing what other young people want and have their own experience.

I believe charities that focus on young people should give them the opportunity to be more involved at a higher level, which can benefit the charity and make it more accessible, allowing them to hopefully engage even more young people.

I was grateful for this opportunity and I’m looking forward to attending more meetings in the future to see the developments of League Leaders. Plus, I can give my input on charity decisions to make it even better for young people.
